Tourism Magazines

Tips & Trips is the name of a tourism magazine that circulated since 1991 until about 2004. It has the honor to be the first bilingual tourism magazine in Honduras, of course others came later but point in fact, I only wrote for this one.

Back in 1991, Honduras was thriving in the tourism arena, becoming a common destination for many people seeking white sandy beaches, Mayan Ruins, snorkeling and diving in the World's second largest Coral Reef, and the then-new trend eco-tourism that included mountain hiking to several Honduras National Park.

There was need in the market for information about where the tourism places where, how much a hotel would cost, how to get there.

Hence, Turismo y Conservación was born in 1991, a monthly publication in newspaper format that would provide the visitors with information on my home country. By 1993 we realized that a great percentage of visitors where English-speaking and had hard time locating information on our Native Spanish-speaking country. We responded with "Tips & Trips", no longer in regular newspaper format but in a practical, easy-to-take glossy-covered magazine. And of course, fully bilingual. I say "we" at this point because it was then that I started working there, both as writer of certain columns but also as a translator for the whole magazine.

Tips & Trips ran un-interrupted until 2003, by 2004 a new format and name was introduced: Mayaland.

Unfortunately at this point getting sponsors, either new or old, proved an insurmountable task and Mayaland was our shortest-lived project so far.

Pretur??

Some of you might be wondering what is this "PRETUR" thing...well, it stands for "Prensa Turística" or Tourism Press, it is the name of the company established to manage the publications.
